Clearer & Brighter Days Ahead

Complexion problems like skin lesions, growths, and spots are bothersome and sometimes tough to hide. In some cases, they might also require professional medical treatment for proper diagnosis and care. For patients in San Jose or Palo Alto electrosurgery at Illuminate Plastic Surgery could be a smart and effective means to correct complexion problems for good.

What isElectrosurgery?

While electrosurgery technology is sophisticated, the procedure itself is relatively simple. Electrosurgery transfers electrical energy to human tissue using a high-frequency treatment electrode. The electrical resistance of human tissue converts this electrical energy to molecular energy, which doctors use to treat a wide range of skin and complexion issues. Raising the temperature of the water in your cells creates a bladeless and precisely targeted cutting device.

What Does Electrosurgery Address?

Electrosurgery can be used to destroy both benign and malignant lesions, excise unwanted tissue and/or control bleeding.

Are There Different Types Of Electrosurgery?

There are four basic categories, including:

  • Electrocoagulation, which is very effective in controlling bleeding in small blood vessels
  • Electrosection, in which the electrode is used to cut tissue
  • Fulguration, a procedure that treats superficial lesions
  • Electrodessication, which uses an active electrode applied to the skin’s surface or inserted into the skin to produce tissue destruction

What Are The Benefits Of Electrodessication?

Electrodessication is not only safe and effective, but it requires little to no downtime. This procedure can usually be completed in just one hour

When To Seek Medical Attention

It’s always a good idea to bring your concerns to a doctor immediately if you notice any change in size, shape, surface, or texture of any skin lesions. In some cases, this may indicate the onset of skin cancer.

What Complexion Problems Can Be Treated With Electrodessication?

Electrodessication in Palo Alto & San Jose is especially useful in treating:

  • Moles
  • Warts
  • Cherry angiomas
  • Skin tags (acrochordons)
  • Lentigo, which is a small pigmented lesion surrounded by normal-looking skin
  • Sebaceous hyperplasia, a condition of the sebaceous glands that produce small, soft, yellowish facial bumps
  • Brown spots
  • Seborrheic keratoses, which are common non-cancerous skin growths
  • Pyogenic granuloma, an especially vascular kind of benign tumor

Your Procedure

First, an antibiotic ointment will be applied to your treatment area. If anesthesia is necessary, lidocaine will be injected into your skin using a very fine needle. A pen-like applicator fitted with a metal probe at the tip allows electricity to flow, which heats the targeted area. The treatment dries out undesired skin cells.

Recovery and Aftercare

After your procedure, an antibiotic ointment will be applied to your treatment area and covered with a dressing. It is best not to wash your wound for two days after your procedure to facilitate healing. You may cleanse with mild soap and water until your wound has completely healed, which may take several weeks. During that period, we encourage you to cover the treated area with an antibiotic ointment and a small bandage. We also can’t stress enough the importance of a sunscreen with 30 SPF or greater.

Results

Electrodessication has proved highly successful in removing skin tags, brown spots, and other skin lesions. Generally, one treatment is sufficient, although results may vary.
