In otoplasty Palo Alto or San Jose plastic surgeons reshape the cartilage of the ear and secure the ear to the head. This can serve to correct overly large ears (macrotia), fix protruding ears or repair the effects of a prior ear surgery that may not have gone as intended.
At Illuminate Plastic Surgery in San Jose & Palo Alto otoplasty is a fairly quick surgery with a low complication rate that produces lasting results. This procedure is performed at our state-of-the-art AAAASF surgery center under general anesthesia but may be done in-clinic with local anesthesia, depending on the complexity of the case. Dr. Boudreault or Dr. Leader will make a tiny incision that is hidden in the crease behind the ear, and will then sculpt the cartilage to adjust the shape and position the ear closer to the head before securing it. The entire surgery normally takes less than two hours and is an out-patient procedure, so you will go home the same day.
There is minimal discomfort for both adults and kids post-procedure. The week after the surgery, you will return for a follow-up visit to remove the sutures. A soft headband helps to keep the ears protected and secure, and should be worn for the first two weeks. Also, avoid strenuous activity for two weeks after surgery to help minimize swelling. The ears will feel swollen and tender for approximately 3-4 weeks, and will gradually subside. At 4-6 weeks, all physical activity can return to normal.
A Palo Alto or San Jose Otoplasty can be used to treat a variety of problems related to ear shape and size. Most patients choose Otoplasty to adjust abnormally large ears and noticeably protruding ears, a condition where the ears fold over and tilt forward. This procedure is not intended to correct poor hearing but is primarily to enhance the face and, thus, boost social confidence. There are no age restrictions for having this procedure, but it is generally recommended to wait until at least the age of 6 for the ears to finish growing.
You will see a noticeable difference in the shape or position of your ears as soon as bandages are removed. After the majority of swelling subsides at 1-2 weeks, your ears will only get better and better. Minor residual swelling can take around 6 weeks to subside. The final results are shown after 2-3 months and will last for a lifetime.
The average cost of a Palo Alto or San Jose otoplasty can range from $13,000–$14,000, depending on the complexity of the individual case. This cost estimate covers all associated fees, including anesthesia and facility charges.
