Your skin protects you from harm. Shouldn’t you return the favor? Age, sun damage, scarring, and genetics can damage your skin down to its deepest, hard-to-treat layers. Deep damage requires deep healing. For that, Illuminate Med Spa offers Deep Skin Peels in San Jose & Palo Alto, CA. Our medically-trained aesthetic specialists deliver deep rejuvenation safely and effectively, so you can always look and feel your best.
A chemical peel is a skin-resurfacing procedure during which a specialized chemical solution is applied to your skin to remove its top layers. As your skin heals, it grows back smoother and healthier than it was.
Skin peel treatments can be performed at three different skin layers and depths—light, medium and deep—depending on the skin issues you wish to address. Deep peels often offer more dramatic results.
Deep peels directly address deep wrinkles, advanced sun damage, scars, and precancerous growths. A deep chemical peel typically requires at least several weeks of pre-treatment to prepare your skin and promote the healing process.
Yes, unless you:
Not necessarily. The deep peel can also be used to treat other areas, including the skin on your arms, hands, and neck.
You will need to provide your doctor with your complete medical history, including a list of all medications you are taking or have taken recently. Your doctor will do a physical exam to determine how your physical features and skin condition might affect your results. Before your peel, you might also be directed to:
Since you will be sedated during your procedure, you’ll need to arrange for a ride home.
Deep chemical peels are usually done at an office or in an outpatient surgical facility. You’ll be given a sedative along with a local anesthetic to numb the skin on your treatment areas. The active ingredient used in a deep peel is a chemical known as phenol, which will be brushed onto your skin, and then diluted with water. A special ointment will be applied to your skin to prevent dryness and reduce discomfort. In some procedures, your doctor will cover your skin with strips of tape or medicated gauze rather than ointment. During your peel, you will be given intravenous (IV) fluids, and your vitals will be closely monitored. To ensure maximum safety, your doctor will perform your procedure in intervals of about 15 minutes. A full facial peel could take up to 90 minutes.
Recovery generally takes about two weeks, after which you can return to work and resume most if not all of your normal activities. You will have some crusting, redness, and discomfort for several days as your skin peels. Your skin could remain at least somewhat red for up to three months. Your doctor will prescribe post-procedure pain medication as needed and appropriate.
A single deep chemical skin peel treatment will produce dramatic results that can last for years.

Risks include infection, scarring, and changes in skin color. That’s why it’s important to choose a medically-trained aesthetic specialist like the ones at Illuminate. Deep chemical skin peel treatment is not recommended for patients with heart disease.
Absolutely not. Deep chemical skin peel essentially conducts a “controlled burn” on your skin. In untrained hands, the chemicals in a deep chemical peel can cause serious damage to your skin.
Since deep chemical skin peel is a cosmetic procedure, your insurance will not pay for it. Discuss costs with your doctor prior to treatment.
