Labial hypertrophy is a condition characterized by one or both of the vaginal lips or labia being larger than usual. Generally, having an enlarged labia is normal and doesn’t always lead to complications. However, in some cases women born with this condition may experience frequent bouts of discomfort and irritation due to their labia size. At Illuminate Plastic Surgery, our goal is to improve the comfort and happiness of our patients. As such, we are happy to offer our labiaplasty procedures to those in need of relief.
The cause of labial hypertrophy is currently unclear. Some women are simply born with large or irregularly-shaped labia, while others may develop the condition after puberty, childbirth, or as a result of aging. There is no specific test or imaging used to diagnose this condition. A diagnosis is usually made through an examination and a comprehensive assessment of symptoms. When you come in for your consultation, our dedicated San Jose & Palo Alto plastic surgeons will discuss your symptoms and determine the best course of action for addressing them.

When it comes to the treatment of labial hypertrophy, we offer a vaginal rejuvenation procedure known as a labiaplasty. This relatively short and simple operation involves the surgical reduction of excess labial tissue. During the surgery, a shortening and evening out of the labia minora is the primary focus. Once the procedure is complete, that excess labial tissue will not return, although the remaining tissue could stretch out again if you have a child. Because this surgery is relatively fast, some patients take this opportunity to combine it with other procedures such as breast augmentation, breast lift or liposuction.
You should see the results from your labiaplasty immediately. While there may be some soreness or swelling, it will dissipate in about a week or two. Following the procedure, the appearance of the labia will be visibly improved without there being any evidence that a procedure was performed at all. Women who are previously embarrassed, uncomfortable or ashamed to wear certain clothing like swimsuits or yoga pants find the procedure to be liberating and restores their sense of confidence and comfort.
