Pregnancy and breastfeeding often result in unwanted changes to a woman’s body, such as larger breasts, sagging breasts, enlarged areolas/nipples, a boxy waistline, pockets of fat in the abdomen, stretch marks, and excess skin on the belly that no amount of exercise and dieting seems to fix.
The loose muscles and stretched skin improve somewhat over time with lifestyle changes, but in some cases, the body never completely returns to the way it was before pregnancy. Though giving birth is one of the most rewarding experiences of a woman’s life, the physical changes that go along with motherhood can cause a woman to feel unfamiliar or unhappy with her post-baby body. Procedures known as mommy makeovers offer a solution to stretched, loose, and sagging skin or areas of unwanted body fat that don’t return to their original state. Years ago, women were forced to accept living with these natural changes in their bodies.
However, now more and more women are seeking out plastic surgeons to rejuvenate their breasts and tummies to the youthful firmness they enjoyed before having children. Treatments can address sagging breasts, loose skin, stretch marks, a protruding belly, and stubborn fat bulges in one fell swoop. Essentially, anything a woman needs to feel like her best self again can be included in one surgery. Collectively, any breast surgery and abdominal surgery performed together can be called a “mommy makeover”.
Dr. David Boudreault will personalize your San Jose or Palo Alto mommy makeover to reflect your needs and goals. Not all women need or desire to have all of the procedures that potentially go into a mommy makeover; It may be determined that you need only to have one or two of them. The only way to determine how many procedures you require is to talk to a board-certified plastic surgeon for an assessment. With that in mind, the following list can give you an idea of common treatments incorporated into a mommy makeover, including:
The training, skill, and experience of your surgeon will determine the degree of success achieved in your Palo Alto or San Jose mommy makeover. Dr. David Boudreault is a board-certified plastic surgeon widely known for his mommy makeovers and is consistently named among the top plastic surgeons in San Jose, Palo Alto and the nation. His patients feel heard by him and cared for in a way that goes beyond the surgery itself.
Recovery time varies and is based on the number of areas addressed and the techniques used during the procedure. You will be standing and walking after surgery and will gradually increase your activity levels as advised by your surgeon. Typically, however, recovery time is approximately two to three weeks. After surgery, you may want or need help around the house from a responsible helper at home for the first three days to ensure optimal recovery for exceptional results. You will continue to have soreness and bruising for several weeks after, but most patients consider the discomfort to be very tolerable. If you have been prescribed narcotic pain medication, you must refrain from driving for as long as you are taking the medication. Most patients will switch from taking a narcotic to a high-strength OTC pain medication after about one week.
Finally, like any surgical procedure, planning for your surgery includes planning for your recovery. While the recovery process will continue over the course of a few months, the initial recovery occurs in the first two weeks. You should try to avoid heavy lifting, including lifting children, for four to six weeks. Essentially, if you still have little ones running around, you should make sure that you coordinate some help to assist with your daily activities, so you can heal optimally after your mommy makeover in San Jose or Palo Alto.
After a mommy makeover Palo Alto or San Jose patients will notice a change immediately, especially the day after the surgery once the surgical bandages are removed. Swelling and bruising will fade dramatically over the first four to six weeks, but any minor residual swelling could take up to a year to fully subside. Because many scars can be strategically hidden in the bikini line, many patients feel comfortable in a bikini after 4 weeks! Scars heal over time, mostly within the first year, so scar gels and scar laser treatments as advised by your surgeon will be most effective during this time. The result continues to improve over the first few months, and the final result is revealed after one year.
Most mommy makeovers combine breast augmentation, tummy tuck, and liposuction in one surgery to return your body to its pre-baby shape. While there is no definite time you need to wait before having a mommy makeover, there are a few things you may want to consider first. While a mommy makeover will not keep you from having children again, having children after your mommy makeover will obviously alter your results.
Therefore, most surgeons recommend that you wait until you have finished having children before undergoing a mommy makeover. Though liposuction and tummy tuck surgery will likely result in you losing a few pounds or inches, such procedures are not designed to be a weight loss solution or a substitute for diet and exercise. The closer you are to your “goal” weight, the more impressive and noticeable the results of your mommy makeover will be. When it comes to breast augmentation or breast lift, we recommend our patients wait until four months after they have stopped breastfeeding and producing milk. Once the breast has reached its stable size and shape, you will be ready for your Mommy Makeover.
Drs. David Boudreault and Dr. Brittany Leader are the premier plastic surgeons in the Bay Area. Starting with a consultation, they can customize a combination of procedures to meet your goals.
All surgical procedures carry risks, which will be discussed with you prior to your procedure. These risks include:
Mommy makeover surgeries also include the risk of loss of breast or nipple sensation, loss of ability to breastfeed, and breast implant leakage. Dr. Boudreault will review your medical history and assess your level of risk with you at your pre-operative appointment.
Unfortunately, it will not. Because these are cosmetic procedures, your insurance will not cover them.
Your cost will depend on which procedures you choose to have. You can expect to pay between $20,000-$50,000. This estimate includes all fees, including anesthesia, facility fees, implants, and any follow-up appointments as needed. If you would like to finance so that you can pay in monthly increments, our patients sometimes choose to use CareCredit or Alphaeon. Many patients have also applied for credit cards with longer terms at 0% interest. We look forward to talking with you about your goals and bringing your pre-baby body back.
