Dr. Berkowitz has been a fixture in the plastic surgery community in the South Bay for 40 years. He arrived at Stanford as Assistant Professor to direct the Burn Unit at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center after inaugurating and completing the first integrated general surgery/plastic surgery program at the University of Michigan. In Ann Arbor Dr. Berkowitz was trained by the world renowned surgeons, Dr Reed O. Dingman, and William C. Grabb who instilled in Dr. Berkowitz the principles of aesthetic and reconstructive plastic surgery. These two facets that define our discipline—aesthetic surgery and reconstructive surgery, led Dr. Berkowitz to treating complex cases of cleft lip and palate, both here in our community and on dozens of trips to Latin America where he was challenged to change the course of a life in a maTer of a few hours by making these children whole. He knew from his own experiences –his father who had been born with a cleft lip and few resources at the time to repair it. That same passion led to his challenge to perfect the reults of rhinoplasty. Authoring many articles and lecturing on the subject of rhinoplasty led to his presidency of The Rhinoplasty Society. Dr. Berkowitz was instrumental in introducing the advantage of ultrasonic power tools to perfect our results, and to shorten the recovery from this life changing procedure. He would lecture frequently on the concept that plastic surgery is more architecture than artistry. Whereby the artist is unlicensed and free to create an image, architects are bound to the laws of man and nature. The nose is a prime example of a framework of bone and cartilage covered by a thin layer of skin, muscle and fat. Reshaping the nose is undoubtedly the most challenging of all the aesthetic procedures.
Dr. Berkowitz brings to Illuminate Plastic Surgery a wealth of experience in treating the often most complex issues, especially in treating the results of less than ideal outcomes in rhinoplasty.
Redoing a nose job , or secondary rhinoplasty, is even more challenging and requires an inordinate amount of patience on the part of an experienced surgeon as we try to separate out the valuable tissue from the damaged. This can require several stages of restoring the health of the overlying skin and replacing cartilage that has been removed with our patient’s own cartilage or on occasion, donated cartilage. The boney framework must be realigned with precision utilizing the lates ultrasonic instrumentation (Piezo technology). Patients who have had untoward results from previous rhinoplasty are more challenging as well as we aTempt to realign expectations with the reality of the materials and conditions with which we are faced.
